LAST 201 (3) Latin American Culture I An introduction to the study of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean through an interdisciplinary approach to the history and culture of the area. The historical, political, social, artistic and economic complexities of the region will be emphasized. Faculty from relevant departments will participate. V4 LAST 202 (3) Latin American Culture II An introduction to the study of South America through an interdisciplinary approach to the history and culture of the continent. The historical, political, social, artistic and economic complexities of the region will be emphasized. Faculty from relevant departments will participate. V4 LAST 302 (3) Special Topics in Latin American Studies An exploration of a specific topic in Latin American studies. Topics will vary by semester and the course may be repeated for credit when course content changes. Topic for Spring 2010: "Contemporary Latin American Film." A study of recent Latin American films and directors in the context of historical events that spurred innovation and creativity in the medium such as the Cuban Revolution, the literary Boom, the Mexico City student massacre of 1968, and the Dirty Wars of the Southern Cone. All films will be subtitled or dubbed in English. May be counted toward the minor in film studies.
