An introduction to the study of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean through an interdisciplinary approach to the history and culture of the area. The historical, political, social, artistic and economic complexities of the region will be emphasized. Faculty from relevant departments will participate. V4

An introduction to the study of South America through an interdisciplinary approach to the history and culture of the continent. The historical, political, social, artistic and economic complexities of the region will be emphasized. Faculty from relevant departments will participate. V4

Special Topics in Latin American Studies
An exploration of a specific topic in Latin American studies. Topics will vary by semester and the course may be repeated for credit when course content changes. Topic for Spring 2007: "The Southern Cone - Terrorism and Counter- Terrorism." An examination of the sociopolitical circumstances that led to the "dirty wars" in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay in the 1970s and 80s and how these countries have dealt with the scars and memories of that period. We will study why governments felt justified in establishing programs for the imprisonment, torture, and disappearance of citizens, the place of these wars within the broader Cold War, the leadership of women in protesting human rights abuses, and the current situation as each country struggles with this legacy. V4
