Why study Spanish? The reasons seem obvious in today's world. Knowledge of the Spanish language and those countries and people who speak it is an invaluable asset in the workplace. But beyond that, the ability to communicate with others in their own language is personally enriching in ways that cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Sweet Briar students and graduates are known for their contributions to their communities, their country and the world beyond. The ability to speak Spanish creates personal connections and an understanding of other perspectives that make those contributions all the more significant and personally satisfying.

The Spanish program at Sweet Briar College is designed to provide students the opportunity to understand the variety and richness of Hispanic cultures through the ability to speak, write and understand the language. For those students who work to achieve it, a degree of fluency in Spanish is the key that opens the doors of many diverse career and life opportunities. Our alumnae are active in the fields of teaching, business, government, medicine, law and social work, among others. They tell us that one of the most important reasons they were able to acquire that all important, first good job or gain entry into the graduate school of their choice, no matter what the field, was that they were able to speak Spanish.

Our program combines class instruction, opportunities on campus to interact in Spanish, mentoring by faculty and alumnae, internships, a minor in Latin American Studies, and study abroad in our Junior Year in Spain or other approved programs to offer students a full range of experiences to enhance their language ability and understanding of Hispanic cultures. From elementary Spanish for the beginner to courses including those with an emphasis on the practice of conversation and writing, the study of culture and literature in Latin American and Spain, business Spanish and translation, and the senior seminar, the on-campus courses give the student the tools necessary to advance in her fluency of the language as well as her understanding of the subtleties of cultural fluency. It is strongly recommended that students plan to study abroad in an approved program and Sweet Briar has scholarships available to help students who may have financial need so that all may take advantage of this experience.
